The Groundwater Register of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a comprehensive document that includes cadastral sheets of groundwater sources and facilities, a catalog of groundwater sources and facilities, a groundwater map, and an explanatory note for the groundwater map. The cadastral sheets of groundwater sources and facilities provide basic information on the geological and hydrogeological characteristics of aquifers, including the distribution and characteristics of sources and facilities, yield, reserves, and physico-chemical properties of the water, as well as information on current and potential water use.
The catalog of occurrences and facilities for drinking water contains basic data on all drinking water occurrences and facilities within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It essentially serves as an extract from the cadastral sheets of drinking groundwater sources and facilities.
The groundwater map includes a topographic base and shows the location of drinking water sources and facilities within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also provides information on geological formations, structural-tectonic and hydrogeological characteristics of the terrain, the distribution of sources and facilities within specific hydrogeological regions, and other relevant data. The map was created in GIS and contains all registered groundwater sources and facilities for which cadastral sheets have been prepared.
The map explanation provides a synthetic overview of all relevant data regarding the investigation, testing, exploitation, protection, and use of groundwater within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It covers the physical-geographical characteristics of the terrain, geological formations, structural-tectonic features, hydrogeological properties of the terrain and aquifers, basic information on water bodies by sub-basins, characteristics of significant sources and facilities, as well as the current use and protection of groundwater in the basins of the Sava River and the Adriatic Sea within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Svrha:
The Groundwater Register of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina serves as a comprehensive database and information tool for the management and use of drinking groundwater. It provides a systematic overview of the basic geological and hydrogeological characteristics of aquifers, the distribution and properties of sources and facilities, yield, reserves, water quality, source protection zones, users, and other relevant data. The Cadastre supports investigation, testing, exploitation, protection, and sustainable use of groundwater, and serves as a basis for the development of strategic documents, water management plans, spatial plans, and environmental protection studies. It contains continuously updated data integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS), enabling practical application in analysis, planning, and decision-making.
Vector data have restricted use and are issued upon request.

Use and access to data are in accordance with the applicable regulations and practices of the Geological Survey of the Federation Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Work on the development of the Cadastre began in 2012, following the decision of the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina on its preparation (Decision No. V.broj: 03/05-31-1178/11-ES dated 22.11.2011). According to this decision, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry, the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Geological Survey of the Federation, the Federal Civil Protection Administration, the Agency for the Sava River Basin, and the Agency for the Adriatic Sea Basin were tasked with preparing the Cadastre. The lead institution responsible for the Cadastre is the Geological Survey of the Federation.
During the development of the Cadastre, the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted the Dynamic Plan for its preparation for the period 2015–2017 and issued Decision No. 03-30-145/2018 on 16.04.2018, which continued the Cadastre’s preparation for the period 2018–2021. Field and laboratory work for the Cadastre was completed in 2021.
The Cadastre synthesizes and presents all relevant data on the investigation, testing, exploitation, protection, and current use of drinking groundwater in the territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in a unified and modern manner. It displays and enables the use of data related to the basic geological and hydrogeological characteristics of drinking water aquifers, the distribution and characteristics of sources and facilities, yield, reserves, water quality, protection zones of water sources, users, and other relevant information on drinking water sources and facilities within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Cadastre also serves as a foundation and unified database for the preparation of strategic state documents such as water management strategies and plans, water use and protection plans, the establishment of a water information system, spatial planning, vulnerability and environmental protection studies, as well as planning and management documents for spatial, water, and forestry sectors, among other purposes.
The Cadastre contains both time-invariant and time-variant data, implying continuous updating even after its completion. The Cadastre data are an integral part of the Water Information System (WIS) and have been prepared to enable their use within a Geographic Information System (GIS) database.
